Our Story

We’ve Been Machining Precision Parts since 2015.

In late 2015, MCHnd came into existence within the confines of a humble garden shed, initially operating on weekends with a CNC lathe and CNC mill to craft high-performance car parts for Mike’s venture and precision BMX and cycling components for Jimmy’s enterprise. The year 2018 marked a pivotal moment as MCHND transitioned from its modest beginnings to a dedicated factory in Richmond, with its inaugural two CNC machines. Mike and Jimmy subsequently committed to the business full-time.

Fast forward to late 2021, our journey led us to our current state-of-the-art, fully refurbished facility, marked by the installation of 96 solar panels in line with MCHND’s commitment to environmentally conscious “green machining.” In 2020, a significant milestone was achieved with the attainment of our ISO9001:2015 accreditation, setting the stage for our future ambitions of securing AS9100 certification and DISP clearance.

MCHND has rapidly garnered a reputation for its exceptional machining of complex components essential in Space, Aerospace, and Medical applications, owing to the dedication and problem-solving prowess of our talented machinists and engineers – a source of pride for our entire team.

The year 2023 ushered in a remarkable addition to our capabilities, with the commissioning of our first robot, enhancing the efficiency of our two Okuma mills. This strategic upgrade has transformed our operation into one of the most efficient machining cells in Australia, boasting 50 pallets between two CNC milling machines, a 20-pallet pool for dedicated 5-axis machining, a 10-pallet pool for 4-axis machining, and an additional 20-pallet pool for 3-axis machining. This innovative setup empowers us to conduct “lights out” production milling, maximizing productivity every hour of every week.

Meet Mike: A Lifelong Passion for Precision and Innovation

From a young age, Mike’s passion for creation and DIY projects has been a driving force, instilled by his father, the esteemed ‘Stevo’ Harding. Upon completing his Toolmaking apprenticeship in 1999, Mike swiftly transitioned to the world of CNC machines, and his journey into this cutting-edge technology became a lifelong commitment. With a career spanning diverse industries, including a remarkable three-year tenure in the UK’s Formula One sector, Mike has honed a comprehensive skill set encompassing CAD design, 5-axis CAM machining, 9-axis Multitasking machining, manual machining, and astute business management.

In his leisure hours, Mike finds solace in quality time with his children, embarking on outdoor adventures through camping, and indulging his need for speed on the racetrack.

Meet Jimmy: A Heritage of Engineering Excellence

Born into a lineage of engineers spanning three generations, James, fondly known as “Jimmy,” was immersed in the world of engineering from the outset. His early years were shaped by the captivating spectacle of his father meticulously crafting historic racing engines from scratch within the family’s engineering establishment, igniting a lifelong passion for precision machining.

Upon the completion of his apprenticeship in Toolmaking alongside Mike, Jimmy embarked on a journey to Melbourne, where he gained invaluable experience in the realm of production machining. His expertise now encompasses the operation of Multitasking Lathes, Swiss Lathes, and adept CAD design.

Beyond the workshop, Jimmy finds his equilibrium in the exhilaration of motorbike rides, BMX adventures, camping escapades, globe-trotting, tranquil fishing outings, and the joy of cheering on his children as they partake in various sporting pursuits.
